For these funny women, there is no age to skate

Every Monday, in Florida, the impressive Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, which specializes in ice sports, sees a strange team of skaters among other visitors. Tropical Spice on Ice is arguably a rare group, as the members who shouldn’t miss this weekly workout are 45-80 years old. The average age of a group of 15 people is about 65 and the oldest is 82. Surprisingly, these women who have overcome the weight of time are happy to indulge in figure skating. This is a much more “dangerous” activity given age, and others choose quieter things such as walking and underwater aerobics. These apparently Daredevil seniors aren’t happy with keeping shape or spending time, but they play at shows and are always presented for good reason.

This ice skating team is a unique group of women who look mature in the most noble sense. Some of them have been skating for over 20 years and others are only a few years. This is when Marjorie Callahan, now 72, joins his teammates at 66 after training with a coach for 6 years.

Performance

Very active, these funny women generally attend three competitions a year and host two local shows. Their performances are very energetic and there is little envy of young people’s performances. In videos posted on social networks, you can see them skating all at once. You can hold hands and form a perfect straight line, sometimes a circle, that moves in the same rhythm. During the competition, the team must be able to develop different styles and even perform crossovers and other tricks. According to the social network page, they always dreamed of evolving on the ice rink, but their lives followed different paths and waited until retirement to skate. Are they afraid of the physical vulnerabilities and vulnerabilities that generally characterize older people, even if they are in good condition? It seems that they are not approaching this sport as an attractive and flying outfit aspect, but as an artistic and informative field like all other forms of physical exercise. “Yes, I no longer have the calmness and fearlessness of a child. Except that my worst fall did not happen on the ice, but with my two little Goldendoodle dogs. When taking a walk, the failure resulted in a dislocation of the foot and a fracture of two ankle bones. Thanks to a rigorous physiotherapy session, I was able to return to skating, “says Marjorie Callahan. ..

25 years of existence and no failure

Ice skating is usually reminiscent of the image of a spinning champion in skimpy clothing, or the image of children who are excited to skate. But on the land of Uncle Sam, the situation is different. As evidence, the opinion of Dr. Angela Smith, a former orthopedic surgeon and former president of the American College of Sports Medicine, has been published on her Twitter account. According to her, more and more adults are skating for fun, to get in shape, or to relieve stress. “Although difficult, skating can be a safe and effective workout for older people. People can start this at any time. Some people have muscle memory since childhood. It’s like skiing … If you can walk, you can skate, “she commented on several sports medicine sites. Dr. Smith points out that all muscles, especially the quadriceps and gluteal muscles, are functioning while sliding on the ice. And this is done by raising your heart rate, just as an athlete is running. On the side of the Tropical Spice on Ice group, in 25 years of existence, the departure of some and the arrival of others has prevented the army from taking the wrong step, rather than clockwork. Since its evolution, everyone has a good understanding of the lessons, with a lot of enthusiasm and certain legitimate pride. Marjorie Callahan hopes to compete individually at Adult Nationals in Littleton, Colorado next October. “It’s not as fulfilling as stopping performance and knowing what your grandchildren are seeing,” she says.
