Hanoi (VNA)-In the last few years, many areas have made changes to respond to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Sports are no exception.

In June 2020, the Prime Minister approved the National Digital Transformation Program by 2025 with a vision of 2030 with the aim of making Vietnam a digital country.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s National Sports Bureau is taking steps to achieve the goals of this program.

He said he set up a data integration center and developed general-purpose software such as management information systems, e-mail systems, athlete database management software, and athlete performance results database management software.

She said the National Sports Service is also paying attention to IT personnel to support the development of IT applications and infrastructure.

Sports fans have become familiar with high-tech tournaments in recent years, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. There are many large-scale virtual races for running, walking and cycling using state-of-the-art equipment.

At the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) held in Vietnam in May, new technologies were applied to specific sports. For example, electronic starting blocks, electronic scoreboards, and even video assist referee (VAR) technology have replaced traditional athletics equipment.

At the shooting event, athletes competed in a brand new arena where targets and electronics were used instead of paper targets and manual scoring.

Electronic sports are probably the clearest demonstration of the development of sports on digital platforms. Playing esports has gradually become popular in Vietnam over the last few years, but it didn’t gain public recognition until it took part in a major professional tournament like SEA Games.

Do Viet Hung, General Secretary of the Vietnam Recreation Electronic Sports Association (VIRESA), said the association will work closely with domestic game distributors and other partners to thoroughly prepare for the e-sports competition at SEA Games 31. He said he is making comprehensive preparations.

SEA Games 31 has 8 esports categories, 10 events continuously held over 10 days, with 485 athletes and coaches, and more than 120 participants from 10 regions. Approximately 900 people, including technicians and international and national referees, are involved in hosting esports competitions.

These statistics may partially reflect the focus on electronic sports in Vietnam and other countries, DoViet Hung said.

As all social aspects are gradually embracing digital transformation, sports are also changing and may join common trends that are considered essential to the development of sports in the current situation. I have. – VNA
